OT: Rear differential fluid on a Ford Explorer

I have a 2002 4 wheel drive Explorer with 25k. A quick lube place checked my rear differential over the weekend and showed me dirty fluid with metal shavings sticking to the magnetic plug. The Ford manual never recommends changing the fluid, it is apparently a synthetic fluid they claim is good for the life of the vehicle.
The indie shop I get work done at says they change it at 30k anyway as part of the major tune-up. Should I get this dirty fluid changed ASAP, or am I ok to wait 5k and have it done as part of the routine 30K maintenance at my indy?
I hope to drive this vehicle a long, long time, and don't mind spending some bucks on preventative maintenance, but I am unclear if it is a problem or not, and if several thousand more miles even matters on a fluid the manufacturer says should never need to be changed anyway.
