Howdy,
Bored, thinking about skiing....
We just moved to Denver. We're big skiers (free heel variety), and will be in the mountains most weekends this winter. I grew up in VT, and by god if I know how to do only one thing right in life, it is how to drive in snow. (I used to drive an '88 Suby, which was unstoppable in anything less than 10" of unplowed snow.)
Now we have a '97 900s (with Yokoham F720 "K2" snow tires - pretty darn good in snow), and a '97 Volvo 850 sedan (with Michelin Arctic Alpins - awesome tires!). As we all know, the Saab is good in the snow; so is the Volvo.
We're debating whether to get a set of studded snows for one of the cars. I'm not particularly interested in stopping to chain up at 6AM when I'm trying to get fresh tracks, and I don't think I can talk my wife into doing it instead. I think if you have studs or 4wd/AWD, you don't have to chain up when the chain laws are in effect. I'll probably get a set of chains/cables anyway to keep in the car for emergencies. Also, I don't really like driving on studs on dry roads (especially wet roads!) at highway speeds - they feel floaty, and somtimes a little scary. On the other hand, there's nothing like a studded tire on hard packed snow/ice, no matter what they say about "studless" snow tires.
Anyone have any thoughts? How often are chain laws in effect? It seems kind of wasteful right now to buy another set of snows - the ones we have work well, and have plenty of tread. Plus, we'll probably be selling the Saab within the next year.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Brian
