well, as a fellow pinner ('gorper' = old-school pinner w/birdseed in the beard, gorp in the pack, & wool on the legs ;-) as well as former ski bum (alta), i vote for the studded tires. yes, they're kind of a pain around town, especially if you live low down and drive up to the snow; however, dealing with chains/cables is a drag, imo. further, studs are unbeatable just when you need their safety most - in the snow/ice. finally, for front drive cars, i'm not too comfortable with non-chained tires in the rear; it makes for added instability, especially when braking; swapping ends on the way out of the mtns at 5pm on sunday evening ain't much fun.
