CD's and LP's and other thoughts Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] (#22) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Randy Thatcher) on Wed, 10 Sep 2003 20:32:35 In Reply to: BOTH SIDES..., VictorVector, Wed, 10 Sep 2003 19:18:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When the CD was released CD's were sold for nearly 2x the LP. Yet it costs over 2X more to produce the LP. IIRC, it was $7.99 vs $14.99. Cost side is crazy. CD's are a little paper, a jewel case, a glass master, and dupe 'em out. LP's a are printed cardboard, multiple stampers, lots of yummy vinyl, etc. Except for the physical media, all costs are equal in CD vs LP: Talent, recording, royalties, marketing, overhead, and profits. So, the big honchos promised perfect sound forever and marked it up. Sure, people were happy to have no "ticks and pops" and CD's are smaller and more convenient. But 2X the cost?
They claimed that the initial launch of the CD was costly and the prices would soon come down to the LP, or less. Guess what, they never came down. It was all a good reason to jack prices up. What a huge crock of $h!t.
So here we are 20-odd years later, CD's are pushing $20 retail, and they are putting out crap. It's no wonder people are fed up. What ever happened to the prices coming down to LP levels?
I buy a lot of used CD's, tons of used LP's, and nearly every new CD I buy is directly from the band at a small venue show. I guess some new CD's are purchased on sale at Best Buy on sale when I get gift certificates, but there's not much new I need.
I think this whole downloading thing is a wakeup call to the industry, but they're reading it all wrong. If there were more than 2 radio stations in every town, and they actually played variety by talented musicians, maybe the industry would flourish. As it is, who wants overpriced dreck jammed down their throats?
My opinions to fix it
1. Lower Prices
2. Put variety over the airwaves
3. Don't allow 1 or 2 media companies to run all the radio stations
4. Cultivate talented musial acts
5. Dancing is not music, put out artists who actually make music

Still prefer the sound of LP's (must be the same quirkyness that makes me a SAAB owner) - I play the vinyl with vacuum tube amplification, too! :)
