in that I hate having to pay for all the smoking-related medical bills. But is the problem in their ads? Having remembered what it's like to be young, I can safely say that I would be much more likely to start smoking because of peer pressure than due to ads. Do the ads make people (ie. teens) think that smoking is cool and popular? Perhaps..but as we shove teens into more stressful situations (ie. eliminating grade 13), aren't we encouraging their thought process and decision making skills? So why, all of a sudden, do we claim that they are too naive to know that smoking is bad for their health?
Heck, I'd rather tobacco companies dump money back into the economy than give it to shareholders. Cigarette sales won't go down until it becomes unpopular to smoke. Anyone have stats on the % of teens that smoke over the last few years, since the crack-down on ads? That would be interesting to see.
Cheers,
Mark
