I hate cigarettes and smoking, think everyplace should do like California and be smoke-free in all public buildings, and I don't really like the advertising messages used. But for kids the no smoking message begins at home. My kids regularly tell me how gross they think smoking is and are immune to peer pressure about it. And that's been their decision, supported by our messages over time.

But IMHO...
The dangers of smoking are well-known and if people choose to smoke it's their funeral (so to speak). And because the dangers are so well-known AND because cigarettes are legal, it seems to me that *only* the users of the product are liable for anything that happens to them.
It's like if you don't wear a seat belt and are injured in an accident. You brought it on yourself. Tough beans.

Of course, the insurance side makes both these thoughts a deeper and more expensive issue: Long term care, cost to society, etc.
But suppose insurance rates were *a lot* higher for smokers, not just the 2X hike we see now, but 3 or 4 times? Or there were exclusions or limitations on the amount of care that would be covered? Would it make a difference? Don't know. People with HIV and AIDS have to pay different rates, if they can even get covered. Why not walking time bombs with nicotine in their veins? If the government is not going to do something, then maybe insurance companies--so intensely profit driven--will.

And finally, in the paper today it said that developing countries are now seeing the same levels of smoking-related illnesses as developing companies. And the 3rd world is where the tobacco companies have their biggest marketing efforts.

That's my .05, FWIW, and as opinionated as ever. ;-)
