In my opinion, it is nice to know exactly when you need to pull over because you're overheating. If you're driving in the desert with the AC on and things are just too hot, then your engine temp is going to start creeping up higher and higher until you just got to stop. Wheras I'm under the impression that if you're losing oil pressure, it is due to something like a failed pump, in which case, you've got no hope and you might as well consider yourself stranded. At least when you're overheating (depending on the cause, of course) you can kind of limp to the nearest service station or safe place. Therefore, it is more useful to have an oil temp gauge and an oil pressure light rather than vice versa. Although I guess a gauge for both would be ideal..
I would be more confortable with a gauge because if you're getting a reading, then you know it is probably working...
