October 17-19 - Swedish Car Day(s), Museum of Transportation, Brookline, MA
This year's SCD has been transformed into an all-weekend celebration.
Please see the agenda below from Pierre Belperron at Charles River SAAB. Also, see the contact info for reservations or questions.
Friday
This year the festivities will start 5PM on Friday evening, Oct. 17th, at Charles River Saab's re-opening celebration of their completely redesigned facility. Come tour the facility and celebrate with the CRS employees. There will be refreshments, guests from Saab Cars USA, gifts and entertainment.
Saturday
We'll continue the celebration with a Saab Rally, starting at 11:30 at Charles River SAAB in Watertown, MA. Charles River will be serving up a BBQ before the drive so come early, after lunch the drive will kick off around 1:00pm
We hope to have a huge parade of Saabs in attendance. We'll head out thru Boston over the newest Boston landmark, the Lenny Zakem Bridge. North towards Topsfield, Newbury, and Ipswich. Then east towards Cape Ann where we'll view some of the most beautiful coastal towns and probably some wonderful foliage as well. We'll pass through Ipswich where we're planning a detour through the Crane Estate and Crane Beach, then continue through Essex, Manchester, and into Gloucester and Rockport. Then back toward Boston and the hotels that will be accommodating the many out of town participants in this Swedish Car Day weekend.
The day closes out with a dinner cruise aboard the Spirit of Boston, where we'll enjoy the sights of the city, the company of Saab enthusiasts and a wonderful meal. Normally a $70 outing per person, this cruise is underwritten by Charles River SAAB and Saab Cars USA and will only cost $20 per person. Space is limited, so if you're interested, email Phil Jackson at pjackson@crsaab.com or call 617-923-9230 and reserve your seat!
(If you are planning on going on the cruise please make your reservations with Phil ASAP so we have an accurate count, and that you get included.)
Sunday - Swedish Car Day!!
Swedish Car Day began in 2000 as a collaboration between Charles River SAAB and Boston Volvo Village. While first year attendance was modest with 55 Saabs and Volvos on display, it was still the best-attended first time Lawn Event at the Museum of Transportation. Attendance continued to grow in 2001 and 2002. In fact, last year we had attendees from all the New England states, as well as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and beyond.
150 cars were squeezed onto the lawn, and this year promises to be bigger and better. One consistent trend has been that the Saabs outnumber the Volvos by about 3 to 1.
This year's Swedish Car Day takes place on October 19 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Those wishing to display their prized cars should plan to arrive earlier - gates open around 8:00 am. There will be refreshments available.
If you've never attended a lawn event at the Museum of Transportation, it is indeed a great outing. The Museum is beautiful, the foliage makes a great backdrop, and a short walk up the hill behind the Museum reveals one of the best views of the Boston skyline.
PS-you don't have to display your car to enjoy Swedish Car Day, but we hope you will! We want to maintain our superiority in numbers over the Volvo faithful!
