Both via Saabnet... The buyer is the one that bears the most trust in the seller.
In both cases I created a bill of sale (email me if you want my template) and we both signed the bill of sale before they sent money. My buyers each sent me cashiers checks which I waited until the bank cleared them (see Scott's scam stuff on this topic). During that time I paid off any outstanding loan I had on the car and paid the extra money to have the bank FedEx me the title. Once the Cashier's check was clear and good I allowed the car to be shipped. One person came to pick it up and the other arranged for a shipping services. I took several dated pictures of everything before the car shipped in case the shipper screwed something up.
Once I got the title I Fedexed the title to the new owner. I let the plates and registration go with the vehicle per Texas law. You will need to contact your Dept of Motor vehicles to understand what you should do in your state -- not the state of the buyer. I did file a form with the state that says I am no longer the registered owner as of XX date so that if parking tickets etc. I never asked for the return tags. In the bill of sale I make the buyer responsible for registration within their satet within 30 days -- this will hold up in a court of law should they do otherwise.
In selling cars before the web I always went on the test drive and always did the meeting in a public place. If they were going to pull a gun on me and take the car than so be it -- that could happen anywhere so don't get worried about it.
Feel free to email me if you have further questions.
