Good feedback from everyone, but the point I'd like to drive home is if reliability is a high priority, Mike should stick to what he knows (Toyota's, etc.). That's why they are simpler cars (Echo) -- to yield greater reliability. I expected to spend more on "this and that" when I got my 2000 9-3 SE because I was interested in it as a project or mini-hobby, NOT for reliable transportation. If reliability was my first priority I'd probably buy Japanese.
Botton line -- I would not expect to purchase a used car that normally retails for $30k or more without expecting repairs to cost more. It's a more complex vehicle, hence more expensive parts. Just my $0.02 worth -- I hope I'm making sense -- Good luck Mike!!
BTW, I LOVE my 2000 black 9-3 SE.
