For example the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, the federal agency the does safety testing) last tested a MY2003 Saab (a 9^5 sedan which got very high marks). Before that they tested a MY2002 9^5 for frontal crash only and a MY1998 900 for frontal crash only. They never tested a 9^3.
There are the European crash tests, which no one in the US bothers to report on, that are generally much more current model years than the USA tests.
Then there are the insurance institute tests and data, but those are weighted toward dollar pay-out instead of occupant safety.
Because of the smaller sales volume companies like Saab often get left out of testing or are considered "statistically insignificant".
