It's not necessary that the structural components would be the same. Today's flexible manufacturing and platform / architecture designs can result in differences there.
Another issue is that the smaller engine may have more 'give' around it rather than a larger engine. The V6 Passat, from the hours I've spent in it, has a packed engine bay, while the 4 is quite a bit more spacious. That, and what happens to the engine after a crash (back and down, or back and on your lap) may explain the differences.
If the data is based on real world information, the 6 may attract diffefrent buyers than the 4, obviously.
