Well having worked in the industry and done a lot of reading, I've seen quite a number of bad stories about Sears. However, my single personal experience was very different.

We were on a long trip (FL-MA) in our '86 9000, and the tires on the car were having belt-shifting problems. We thought we could make it home, but the problem continued to get worse (surprise!). So we found ourselves in Pennsylvania needing tires, and the only place that had decent tires that fit was... Sears.

I must say my experience there was excellent. They sold us good tires at a good price (Z-rated Dunlop SP5000's for < $100/ea.). They used a rim-clamp machine and didn't scratch the rims at all. And the tires were properly inflated, well balanced, and the lug nuts were torqued properly (I checked when we got home). Did the job pretty quick, too.

As for NTW/NTB, years ago I went there all the time and liked them. Biggest complaint was how long it took to do the work, but that seems to happen everywhere. Only reason I stopped going was now I've got access to a shop so I order from Tire Rack and do it myself.
