I pulled over immediately. Had my license and registration ready when he came to the car. Told him I was a dummy, had taken stupid pills for breakfast and apologized. Kept both hands on the wheel. Removed my sunglasses so he could see my eyes.
He checks and sees no offenses. He writes me for not wearing a seat belt, even though I was, which is not a points violation (and NH, where I live, doesn't require seatbelts).
Also...this was about 4 mos after 9/11 and said he appreciated that I was courteous and respectful. He even called me a 'complete gentleman!'
Same thing worked in Nevada just 3 weeks after 9/11, when cops were really paranoid.
This approach works best if you are over 40, though. And I'm definitely that! Cops are mostly just doing their job and if you are nice and not doing something really outrageous and don't insult their intelligence by lying you'd be amazed how well it works.
