Acura Bosch alternator question

I just took my 87 Legend in to the shop because it is not charging. I think the alternator may be worn out since it has 190,000 miles. Bearings seem to be OK--no noise anyway. My question is whether anyone knows if the brushes or the voltage regulator might be enough. How would I know if the whole unit has to be replaced?
I mentioned the voltage regulator to the shop but the guy told me it was internal so he would replace the whole unit if that is right. However my manual does have instructions for removing it and you can buy one at some sources. The picture I have (see below) looks a bit different from the Saab ones I am used to--and for example cybertroll.com does not carry the regulator and gives a note about it being internal. Any thoughts here? I don't want to get hosed but I don't have time to do the job myself nor a garage....
Thanks, Derek / 1994 900 S V6 139,000mi / 1987 Acura Legend 2.5 190,000mi
