it really depends on how loud and the type of music. i was pleased with my onkyo many years back. basically solid and good warranty/service. That being said, if you are a serious listener you WILL be able to hear a difference in an amp. slight but there. transient response, current sink for the oomph of a plucked bass string etc. speakers are still most important. a fine set of speakers will shine with a "mediocre" ( vs sterling) amp. up to a point. again...how loud? you may want to see if you can find a bridgeable amp so you can upgrade to twice the power and still have matched stuff. if you want to add a s/w then you have other options and there will always be compromises no matter what at that price range...ALL price ranges actually. Some of the boston acoustic speakers are nice. a dual 6.5 woofer arrangement really sings in the upper bass area. much better transients than a single bigger cone. imaging is the all important goal. how will you be able to fit them in your room etc. digital processors are nice for some things but for your price range it would be kinda cheesy when compared against real components. a turntable is a nice touch, i have an old denon that i dust off from time to time with a moving coil cartridge and i burn my own cds with a sb live card on my computer to save those old funky never found found again jazz tracks. turntables will feedback at hi levels though.
you may want to consider raising your budget to accomodate speakers, and fill in later. fwiw. i spent what was for me the ungodly amount of 5k$ 17 years ago on a 2 channel system (tandberg amps, ads speakers and a turntable) that has lasted and lasted and has been abused like raul's saabs. prior to that i had probably purchased 7 or 8 5-700$ systems that went to god knows where. quality will never go out of style and you will never dump them to family and ex-girlfriends :). so what to buy. NAD/adcom or other hi quality amp. "ok" turntable, burn that vinyl to cd, "marginal" CD player, "ok" tuner, and "ALLL" the speaker you can possibly afford. looking back i should have swapped Tandberg for adcom and more power and spent the rest on speakers. I like it LOUD...( or use to anyway back when i could hear) start with speakers and backfill. add a self powered subwoofer next year, they "bolt right on".
what i would do is fine the best quality recording of the music you like and haunt a quality sound shop for a while, listen to stuff you could never possibly afford, locate the differences and choose your compromise. if you were in seattle magnolia hi-fi would treat you right. i am suprised that mr aaron gilbert has not chimed in yet. he works for magnolia hi-fi repairing that hi end stuff and takes other stuff home whn no one is watching. ;). he will have some good input on quality i am sure.
