You could go the simple route as you suggest and get a Denon (or the like NAD, etc) 2 channel system. It will be OK but considering the fact that you're a Saab guy, I bet you want more.
Here are two rules to go by;
1) If it sounds better, it IS better.
2) Always listen to it with your own music before buying.
3) Take reviews with a grain of salt. Decide for yourself.
Here are some ideas:
1) I bought a Linn Classik for a spare room a few years ago and really like it. It's entry level high end. It's basically a receiver with a very good CD player integrated into it. The tuner is quite good as well. It doesn't have a TON of power but it'll play full blast all day. It is VERY forgiving and easy to listen to so if you sit down in front of it, give it a try. Also, you'll save money on connectors because it's all in one unit. I'm not sure if it will accept TT input though. Something to watch out for. I think I paid $1200 for it, excluding the speakers.
2) Why not buy used high end? I can think of Natural Sound in Natick MA or Ensemble in Nashua NH as places to start.
Note that you do NOT have to spend a lot of money for decent sound. I remember the day that my friend's NAD receiver blew away my Denon integrated amp in a sound comparison test. The Denon was 4x as expensive.
Also think about what is important to you. Go into the store knowing the following;
1) Do you need a remote?
2) What type of music do you listen to?
3) Do you like to listen to it loud or do you keep it on all day as background.
4) What is your real price range
5) Where will everything go? Do you have space considerations?
My systems;
Goldmund system with Revel F30 speakers. My favorite but rather expensive.
Linn Classik with modified speakers using the Linneam tweeters. I really hate to admit that the speakers are from Radio Shack but I liked them. If it sounds better, it IS better. They don't make them any more though.
Adcom system with homemade speakers. Making your own speakers is a topic that we will ignore for now. You don't really save money that way.
