you could put a step drive on the motor shaft and bit drive shaft and adjust the bit RPM to suit the job at hand. If necessary, you could always upgrade the motor in the future. In the meantime pre-bore the hole so that the Forstner has less "meat" to hog through. Start your hole with the Forstner first, though, so after you pre-bore, the Forstner will have its own bore to follow. Yes, this is a three step process, but well worth the effort if accurate and professional results are important.

IMO, the Sears Craftsman tools do not have the "oomph" to do the job. And any hand held drill with enough power to do the job could wrench your arm if you're not careful. As mentioned previously, Milwaukee sells a pro tool used by plumbers and electricians to bore through framing lumber and flooring. It has a "right angle" drive and is a bear to work with, but it does the job. Heavy as heck though, as is their "straight drive" drill, and hard to control accurately.
