Great points about how a 99 would be tough to keep on the road--even with the extra cash from the sale of your 9-3. And you've had personal experience with keeping one on the road for many miles, so I'll defer to you on that as I've never owned a 99--only wanted to, but frankly I too would be a little concerned about the difficulty of keeping it on the road as an only car. Maybe a second car someday for me, but it sounds like you're not interested in having 2 cars, so that's a moot point for now.
And yes, I can't see the 99s becoming a serious "collector" car and in general and increasing in value...except to a few of us serious Saab nuts. But who cares if it will never be considered a "classic, collector car" to most people, if it's your ideal car, go for it.
But anyway, it sounds like you're set on moving on and getting a car with a/c and modern safety features (and plenty of available parts). And I certainly can't argue with that as its what I've done to a smaller degree--I've moved on from my old C900 to now we have a NG900 and an A4, though I still miss the C900 in many of the ways you speak about and others.
So, my next suggestion would be a 9-2 (in many ways it sounds somewhat like a modern 99, though we'll have to wait and see of course), but if you can wait til they come out in a few months and test drive one, I would suggest doing that--and then compare it head-to-head with other smallish, sporty hatchbacks/wagons such as a Mini, VW GTI, etc.
