I had a white iBook & I thought it worked just fine-until I upgraded to PowerBook about 15 mo ago (15" titanium, 1GHz). This machine continues to impress me & those who see it. It has replaced my desktop machine without a compromise- it was purchased w/ a DVI to ADC adapter to plug into an existing flat panel display, but the built-in screen is so good I never use the adapter. A wireless mouse was a good addition, airport is built-in & flawless. Since it is the sole machine there is no "synch" issue w/ a desktop device. (anybody interested in aDVI to ADC adapter & a 2.5 yr old iBook?)
If you're doing just word processing the iBook will do the job well. If you are even a little interested in video or presentations, or travel a lot & need a little more ruggedness, get the PB. The 12" screen gets a little small for a solo device.
I have not found AppleCare or other extended warrantees to be worth the money. Serious problems seem to come up in the first few weeks-well in the standard coverage period. Long term durability has been better than my Saab..
