PLACES TO LIVE:
As in all cities, there are numerous and varied neighborhoods all over. If you drive a Saab, I will make the presumption that you are a middle - above middle class economic earner and that you are well educated both academically and culturally. That being said, as a Saab driving "lifer" these are the neighborhoods I'd prefer (your Realtor (I'm not one, but believe in them) will understand the distinctions):
New Orleans: Algiers Point, Bywater, Lower Garden District, Garden District, Uptown, University (also Uptown), Carrollton, Faubergs Marigny and St. John, the Esplanade Ridge, Lakeview, Lake Shore, Lake Vista, Lake Terrace. There are a few areas in New Orleans East, but I'm not familiar with them at all. Your Realtor will most likely point you in the right direction.
Jefferson East Bank: Old Metairie, Metairie, Kenner, Harahan, River Ridge.
Jefferson West Bank: Terry Town, Gretna, and various subdivisions built over the last 20 years. Again, your Realtor will point you in the right direction.
EDUCATION AND SCHOOLS
My wife and I believe in public education and we are very fortunate to live in Lakeview where the Ed Hynes Elementary School is located. However, Keith is correct for the most part: there are few other excellent public schools in New Orleans... Lusher in Uptown is one other of note, as is Audubon Montesorri (also Uptown). New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) is an excellent school if your kids are talented musically or vocally.
Generally, in New Orleans (and Jefferson) the school choice is made for you by the generally poor quality of Public Schools. Most people in the Saab demographic send their kids to either parochial (Catholic) or private school. In New Orleans, parochial schools serve a vast number of parents that want a better education for their kids but can not afford a private school tuition ($ 3k/yr as opposed to 7-10k/yr). If you're not Catholic, the only catch is that parochial schools require attendance in Religion class. But I could be wrong and that may no longer be the case. Just keep in mind that some of the very best schools in New Orleans are parochial or affiliated with the Catholic Church. If you're willing to accept their rules of attendance, your kids can and will get one of the best educations available. As for private schools, if you can afford the nut, your Realtor will again point you in the right direction.
Lastly, New Orleans is a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE! We're not the biggest or the best, but there is a zest for life here like few other places on Earth. New Orleans is the Paris of the Americas: we love to live and live to love. We live to eat, not eat to live. We celebrate life, our culture, and heritage every day and week. Today is Mardi Gras and we are "piggin' out" and partying hard until midnight. Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, and you'd be suprised to see the number of businessmen who will be sporting "ashes" all over town. Next up is Jazzfest, a don't miss event if you're a music lover. There's too much to talk about here, just know you'll be living in one of the greatest cities in the world.
