I guess the office applications are fine, in fact quite a few people claim to use them regularly. My experience though (maybe 2 years ago) was that they were bloated with too many features and needed an inordinate amount of ram to start up and run in a way that made them useable.
AbiWord (word processing) and Gnumeric (spreadsheet) are exceptions to that statement though. Both are well designed and lack bloat.
the "Gimp" is a very very nice photo editing tool - comparable to photoshop and free as well.
