buy a torque wrench at SEARS, or on line (look for S-K or Armstrong) and don't buy the cheapest one, throw away the factory wrench (or save it for when the car moves on), ans put the torque wrench, a 17mm socket, and a short (3-4") extension in the trunk on top of the spare. the bar on the torque wrench will break lose even overtightened nuts. A cross bar is useful for spinning the bolts, but be sure you buy metric. I find that the torque wrench bar works even better than the cross bar for breaking loose stubborn bolts. If you can't justify that, buy an 18" 1/2" drive flex breaker bar at SEARS (Craftsman, not "companion junk) and the same 17mm socket and extension. If you put these items in the trunk on an old towel with the spare, you will always be safe. You spent $35,000 for the car, don't skimp on these very necessary tools. When these bolts stick, very big people can't break them loose without proper tools, and if they are there, the person who stops to help will be able to do so.
And when you buy tires or have them switched or rotated and the shop uses an air gun, use the torque wrench to back off each bolt and re-tighten.
I just went for inspection, and asked the (tire) shop that removed one wheel to tighten it by hand, he adamantly refused, saying the wheel might come off on the highway and he'd be liable. ("We've been here for 80 years, and you're the first one to mention this")
