I'm one of those people who have used programs like pagemaker since it came with Windows Runtime (pre windows 3.0 days) on a 286 (and the old black and white little macs) This was back when fonts weren't scalable at all.
Did a bit of desktop publishing for fun and profit in its heyday, worked on school and college newspapers, etc... I also helped out at a local magazine, etc...
Yes, rivers and justified text that has crazy amounts of whitespace in it bother me a little. These can be reduced by not having as many columns in a page. Newspapers and magazines with narrow columns and especially sidebars have the most problem with this.
I am more bothered when people do reverse text (white text on a black backgound) and use a thin tiny serif font or other font with really skinny parts that won't stand out from the black well. A bold sanserif font is usually a much more legible choice for reversed text.
Underlined text with lots of characters cutting through the line bothers me too (think pqyg with the lower parts crossing through the underline). In these cases, the underline goes through the letters instead of under it.
Also, many Microsoft publishing products and other lower quality products do a horrid job with their default kerning of letters in titles. Think of the space between an A and V when they are side by side. Every font handles this differently, and it's very apparent when the letters are bigger. The few seconds it takes to observe how things are kerned and adjust it if necessary are time well spent on covers, titles, logos, etc..
