I have done a very similar comparison.
We own: 2003 lpt wagon - auto tran with premium package; stereo is beautiful for true hi fi; not a rock'n'roller, but great hi fi sound reproduction (again, we have the upgraded stereo, but don't most 9-5 cars come with the premium package?).
The auto tranny is nearly perfect; I don't think I can shift any better in 90% of driving situations.
I do not like the paddle shifters -- hard to find them with the wheel turned.
Our 9-5 handles beautifully; I have not driven every car in this price range, but I've driven quite a few; it handles really nicely.

I recently had 2004 linear 9-3 auto tran as a loaner:
Auto tranny not as good, BUT it's not a big deal, as the car can be shifted "on the floor;" this is much better placement. I need to shift the 9-3SS myself; the automatic transmission makes the car feel underpowered to me. This is probably not a problem with 210 hp, but I had the linear.
I thought the radio sounded like garbage. Complete garbage. What's the swedish word for "crap?"
I agree with most everyone regarding the interior; it is not pleasing to my eye.
Similar handling compared with our 9-5. Perhaps a bit more nimble, or was this all in my head because I know the car is a bit smaller?

My advice: if you need the room, get the bigger car. The wagon is awesome in Aero form.

If you don't need the room, your post makes it sound like you'd be just as happy with the 9-3. You can take the money you'll save (upfront, and on gas) and upgrade the stereo. Placing a decent boom box in the back seat would be an upgrade.

Used might also be a great way to go. Good luck with your decision. I don't think either one of these cars would be a bad choice.

Anybody read NYTimes review of Acura TL today? The best front-wheel drive car, hmmmm.......
