We now own a 2000 9-5, a 1994 9000 Aero (with MapTun Stage 3 system) and a 1990 900S (non-turbo), and previously we also had owned a 1995 NG900SE (V-6). While the 1990 900S was a fun car to drive, the 9000 (particularly the Aero)is much larger inside (and somewhat shorter on the exterior); the 9000 also offers the advantage of a four speed automatic versus the 3 speed auto on the Classic 900s, although neither of the automatics is know for longevity versus the manual transmissions. Given the choice between the Classic 900 and the 9000, it is no contest that I would take the 9000 by a huge margin. The 9000 would also be our choice versus the NG900. The choice between the 9000 and the 9-5 is a difficult one. The 9-5 is a much more modern design, with significantly improved HVAC, quietness and body stiffness versus the 9000. The 9000 ride is sportier than our more softly sprung 2000 9-5. If you are interested in a non-Aero used 9-5, the 2000 model year does offer the ability to add Saab's performance ECU ($800) which ups the hp from 170 to 200, and the torque from 207 to 226; we have this ecu on our car and would recommend it. The 9-5 also has the advantage, over the 9000, of a much more reliable Aisan-Warner auto transmission. The 9-5 is probably the most comfortable long distance road touring car that I have experienced, although the 9000 is also very good.
Good luck in your search!
