Montreal is a very cosmopolitan city. There is no clear majority language on the Island of Montreal (the off-island suburbs are predominantly francophone).
I think francophones make up 45-50% of the island popualtion. The rest are anglophones and allophones (everything else). There are 800,000 anglophones in the Montreal area.

You can easily get by with English in Montreal. French is useful for signs, and to be polite to the locals. You will find that in downtown Montreal, English is used just as much as French. I once tried to order Big Mac combo in French downtown and the girl yelled the order back to the kitchen in English. The neighbourhood often has a lot to do with what language is spoken. East Montreal (east of st. Laurent street) is mostly francophone, West is more anglophone. All the east-west streets (and street numbers) indicate if you are in East or West Montreal, so you should have some indication based on that.

Montreal is very different from the rest of Quebec culturally and politically. This is mostly due to the anglophones and allophones present there. Montreal as a whole has always voted against separation, and against separatist governments. If Montreal was not a part of Quebec, odds are that Quebec would not be part of Canada.

You will get a better feel for Quebec culture in Quebec City. Montreal has a culture all it's own that cannot be compared to the rest of Quebec, or Canada for that reason.

Places to visit:
- underground city. (shopping malls under the buildings and streets of downtown that go on for miles).
- Ste. Catherines St. all the shopping and action. high class shops next door to strip clubs. only in Montreal.
- St. Denis St. - shopping and resaurants on the French side.
- Old city - Don't miss Notre Dame
- Cresent St. - all the nightclubs - mostly English
- St. Laurent street - Very trendy in places between Sherbrooke and des Pins.
- Walk through McGill Campus Downtown. Beautiful campus.
- Olympic Park. (leaning tower and Biodome)

That's a short list.
Have fun!

Eric
