The key for anyone in finding a mechanic (or a doctor..approved by your HMO of course, lawyer, contractor, etc) is finding one that comes recommended by friends or others in the genre of community you are looking for services (ex. saabnet community).
When I first bought a SAAB I went to the dealer for service. Cost a bunch of money but...this is a good dealer, with a good service dept...Shaw SAAB in Hingham, MA...since you are in MA also. I still am on a first name basis with the service manager there even though I no longer go there except for parts. I think their service is better than the average SAAB dealer because they only sell SAAB and have been that way from the beginning. I'm guessing you are taking your car to Charles River SAAB...I'd expect you would find the same type of service there. You'd never find it at one of the mega-dealers carrying several marquees. You are just a number to them.
When I went looking for an indie I started here on the mechanics list. Found ABJ in Somerville. Been going to them for 5 years now with no complaints. What I've found with them is what the others have said here...willingness to help me through DIY projects, use of used or remanufactured parts when appropriate to save a few $$$ and honesty. They know me, they know how meticulous I am over my cars and they treat them as such.
If you go out price shopping every time you need a mechanic you'll never establish a relationship with anyone whom you can trust to do the right thing with your car....whether that is the dealer or an indie.
