off-topic, french coffee press cleaning

Well I broke my 3rd carafe in the last year last night while washing it in my cast enameled sink. I've tried the lexan coffee press (for camping from REI) and while it doesn't crack or shatter in the sink, its very difficult to get clean. It always smells slightly like rancid coffee grounds - even after a thorough hot-water scrub with Dawn/Ivory/Palmolive etc. Anybody have a good technique for cleaning the filter at the bottom of a french press? Alternatively, anyone know where the beakers for french press (1 litre beaker) can be had for little money?
I've been playing around with roasting my own beans lately. While certainly better that folgers, I can't say the taste is better or worse than my local roaster. That in mind, the price ($14 for 3lbs on eBay) makes them a good idea.
