Ah, finally something in my area of expertise :-)
I have a '95 Geo Prizm that consumes 1qt/1k miles. 200k miles on her now (enough to the moon, and beginning on the way back). In my case, oil consumption, charted to painstaking detail, is NOT linear, and the cleaner the oil the less of it it is. That is, oil change to 600 miles - no burn. Medium consumption from T+600 to T+2000, and T+2000 to T+3000 more of it. It does look bad at T+3000 despite having 3 quarts in. Filtering is another issue, the filter does look pretty bad at the end.
In my case it is going thru the piston rings, but the engine has adequate compression and power. It's only used for the wife's commute and errands, not long trips.
