I used to hang with a guy who had a 69 Vette w/ a 350 engine and he rarely changed the oil. He would change the filter and add a quart. Did this routinely on various cars and they all ran fine. Lost touch with him so I don't know how it works over time. Then again, you can get away with a lot on a big old V8.
Used to have a neighbor who worked for an oil company--some kind of engineer. He said no matter how they tested it, conventional oil was still fine at 5000 miles unless the car had nothing but stop and go city driving. He would change oil, maybe at 10K. And that was with dino oil.
OTOH, my indy had a 1999 9-5 in the shop about a year ago that had never had the oil changed in 50K miles. Engine was toast. The bottom screen was plugged solid. When I hear of someone only adding oil as needed, it makes me think about how an engine is designed. My indy said the pick-up screen in the newer Saab engines is much finer than in the old C900s which relied more on the filter to do the dirty work and didn't clog as easily. He recommends people buying a used NG 900, 9-3 or 9-5 drop the pan to clean the screen so they are starting clean.
If you change filters it would seem oil could go a long time, but as Micheal Smith notes, it will break down over time. I'd love to see some real scientific studies of this, not the anecdotal and opinion-based stuff we usually see here.
