I've seen the magazine ads and I've seen the commercials but the advertising for the 9-2x just doesn't do it for me. I'm in the demographic they seem to be aiming their marketing at, but if anything I look at the advertising as lackluster rather than enticing. If they want to catch us (males in my demographic), I think they'd be far more successful if they at least mentioned some power figures rather than focusing solely on handling. Let me hear some engine roar while the car whips around corners with its velcro wheels! I think BMW and Caddilac are best at that. Everytime I see the caddy commercial that has the car going faster than its sound I want one because it goes fast. Volvo, as much as I hate to admit it, has a much better campaign for their new car than Saab. The only difference I see between old Saab ads and 9-2x ads is that they use 60's rock music now instead of the "Saab theme song" (I personally think the old ads were more affective). Volvo on the other hand has gotten their car placed into a rap video and a video game and has exploited both points in commercials. Gen-Y guys love video games and rap! If Saab hopes to be hip, they have to do more than just put a 20 something driver in a car in a commercial, they have to demonstrate that they either have some serious power for that price, or they have to show that they're cool to own. Muted 60's rock music with a soothing female voice does not make a car cool. Velcro wheels (as cool an idea that is) does not demonstrate power. If Saab hopes to compete with Volvo for my generation, they're going to have to try some different techniques. If I wasn't already a Saab head, judging by the ads out today, I'd go with Volvo :(
