As an ad student, it's hard for me to give an opinion of an advertisement, since I pay much closer attention to them even for products I am not interested in...hell I read about Ads (Ad Age, Creativity, Adweek, American Demographics) watch ads (adcritic.com) and currently working an 8 month agency internship in Indianapolis.
At first glance, I didn't mind the ad...it had stopping power due to the upside down car...but that gets old. Also, the dual color typeface is ugly, the color red tells a reader to STOP (especially in an Automotive ad) You never want your reader to stop reading.
As for taglines...personal opinion is the "Find your own road" was strong(er) although it reminded me a lot of Chiat/Day's/Nissan's early 90's launch of the Sentra (Bob's road...everyone knew Bob and he had certain privliges)
State of Independence? What does that say?
There are very few car ads that impress me anymore of them, Chiat/Day's Nissan shift _ campaign is high on the list (at least at first launch...its watered down now...remember the two page spread that had a guy with artificial legs climbing the mt..no cars in it at all it was to intro the campaign...that ad said (I believe) shift_expecations.
Carmichael Lynch's Harley and Porsche ads are amazing that agency pours emotion into those ads. Some of the porsche headlines are, "Do you really need 450hp to pick up diapers? Have you ever run out of diapers?" or "Calling it transportation is like calling sex reproduction" If you want a laugh check out their website and watch the Tractor Suppy Company's ads
As for timelessness, Burnett's VW ads will always be on the top of every automotive ad ever made, from "Lemon" to "0-60? Yes."
Saatchi has watered down the brand esscence of Toyota and their advertising strategy is all over the place.
Saab doesn't have terrible print ads but they aren't anything special either. However! Their direct mail pieces are PHENOMINAL, the intereative (saab i-mail) is awesome. Much better than almost anything I have seen from any other company.
Only my opinion-
Cheers!
