I've changed out a couple of them.
Even if it's a different size than your original, repiping isn't a big deal, especially if its copper.
Chances are that the gas line will be at a different location than your old one. I used a short flex line to accommodate the different elevation, and used the required black iron pipe to make a dropleg and make the conneciton directly to the unit.
The biggest problem I encountered when I put the last one in was that the sealant they used on the dropleg side of the gas shutoff valve made it impossible to remove the old downstream piping.
If you're into sweating (copper, that is), this gives you a chance to put in new shutoff valves. I prefer ball valves over the traditional globe-style shutoff valves because they give you a bit lower pressure drop.
It's also an opportunity for you to replace the tank-style heater with a continuous-flow type heater if you plan on being there for a long time.
