It is so depending on year and model.
But if we talk older cars (late 80s early 90) a non turbo Volvo 740 or 940 is almost as bullet proof as you can get.
The turbo model is still ok but keep in mind that for every extra gadget that is added to a car, it is a potential for repair (turbo, P/S, P/W, P/M, P/L, A/C or ACC) and so forth.
Saab uses a different philosophy than Volvo with their spearheading approch and new innovations compared to Volvos sturdy but boring. That cost Saab some in less reliability.
I think many car brands (especially Saabs) get an overall bad reputation because of bad mechanics and owners not wanting to spend money on repairs as soon as the car develop problems.
I have lost count on how many Saabs I have seen that is wrenched to pieces by bad mechanics and DIY people using non Saab parts (it's still possible to use after market parts of right quality).
Don't know why they think Saab is so much more difficult to repair the right way than a Volvo.
It is a lot more Volvos on the streets but fewer of them are wrenched to pieces.
If we are talking about newer cars (late 90s, 2000) Volvo have taken a nose dive in reliabilty and Saab have some problems too.
It's called electronics and networking between computer modules.
I don't get that many newer Volvos so I can only fathom the extend of the computer problem since I see again and again.
Car comes in with C/E light on. I find fault codes in 4-5 computers all relating speed sensor or CAN (Controller Area Network)or some other wierd problems.
Reset the codes and drive the car for days without anything happening.
2-3 weeks later the light comes on with the same codes or maybe some other ones and you are stuck with figuring out which module that is knocking the others off the network system.
Ok, back to Saabs.
I have a soft spot for the 9-5 V6. It seems more reliable than the 4 cyl EXCEPT if the timing belt and tensioner is forgotten or repaired the wrong way.
That's all for now
Anders
