I don't imagine any passenger car or light truck could survive that kind of impact. It doesn't say the speed of the truck, but on the TZ I would imagine the truck could easily have been going 50, and probably far too close the the Benz. A 3500 lb car would just collapse when hit by a tractor trailer. The force of maybe 15 + tons of truck, hitting fairly high on the rear end would have to be incredible.
Interesting that you investigate crashes and choose to drive Saabs. Can you share some of your reasons? What other makes would you recommend?
