I knew the first time that I heard this that GM was fishing for handouts. Otherwise they would not say a damm thing and then lock the doors. And the German workers are threatened by some manufaturures (VW for one) with moving production to former eastern block countries and concessions are happening! Good by 35 hour work weeks etc.
Don't forget that these folks are forced to endure paid 6 week summer vacations, funded heath care and in Sweden, unless things have changed, one can book sick days, 20% of the time without any doctors notes or any evidence of any health issues, it is, or was the law, and the employers never know how many will show up on any day, so they have to have more employees to cover the 'sick' and even more to cover the days when there is above average not showing up, so most of the time there is a lot of folks who are there underemployed.... if they show up, with an assembly line, you can't run short staffed, perhaps that is why Volvo did the work on flexible assembly teams years ago, all the ills of social programs run amuck, don't get me wrong, I am Canadian by background and I think the US could learn a few things about a more balanced attitude... and you wondered why your Volvos and Saabs were so costly... and GM can't make any money with Saab.
