The problem started last Sunday, the display on my three year old 15-inch Envision LCD monitor suddenly went black.
Attempts to restore the image through mouse or keyboard activities didn't work. Re-booting the computer resulted in the appropriate lines of text appearing on the screen during the boot sequence, followed by the WindowsXP welcome screen, but when the desktop should have displayed I only received a black screen. FYI - I use one of the standard Windows desktop schemes.
Doing a complete power-down (all power turned off to CPU and monitor)followed by a restart, would return the screen to proper operation.
I initially thought this was a Virus or Spy-ware problem. Updated files and Spy-ware program, scanned machine, found lots of previously missed spyware issues, but problem still persisted.
The loss of display problem will happen after a couple hours of computer use, after the screensaver activates (standard Windows screen saver too), or after power saving display shutdown if machine is left on and idling.
I assumed this was a symptom of a failing video card or driver so I downloaded new drivers for my card ( a Gigabyte brand with nVidia's GeForce MX400), but still no problem resolution.
Yesterday I purchased a new video card (ATI Radeon low-end card) and installed it with its drivers, as well as removing the previous card's drivers from my machine. I also installed a cabinet cooling fan at the same time since my machine previously didn't have one. I still have the black screen problem.
My thoughts are now leaning towards; 1) a bad LCD monitor, or 2) a bad AGP socket on my motherboard. Both of these are $300 problems.
HELP! Thanks in advance.
