Parents bought me a HS ring (yellow gold, probably about $300-400 back then) as a gift. I wore it for the better part of senior year after I received it. Also wore it for a small time Freshman year of college. However, due to its significance, value, size, etc., I stopped wearing it and it is now on my shelf in my room with other memorabilia.
For college (BS/BA), I opted to not get a class ring. Discussed it with my parents, and they said I never wear my HS ring anymore, so why spend that money on something I won't wear too often. So I decided on no.
My GF did the opposite, and her parents bought her a ring for college. However, she wears it all the time (several years now) with the claddagh ring I gave her; barely ever comes off.
For me HS was a significantly memorable experience for a lot of reasons. Although college was fun as well, there wasn't the bond I found in HS, so that contributed to my decision. I will remember both for their own reasons, ring or no ring. If I did it again, purchasing and not purchasing the ring, I don't think I would change it, although maybe use some of the money to by my first Saab sooner!
The good thing having the HS ring around, my GF stole it from me to purchase a claddagh ring to give to me last week - used it for size. A nice gift on our 6-year anniversary. Now only if I can pull it together to by her the "correct" ring!
As for selection advice, make it something meaningful to you - for HS we did have one standard ring where you could choose colour, stone, "activity," and then inscription (initials or name). College is much "looser" but keep it simple, and meaningful, as mentioned. Colour depends on what you wear, as I used to wear all yellow gold which is why I chose it for HS. My GF wears silver, so I have made the shift to silver or white gold (not yet to platinum or titanium although both nice).
Good luck whichever decision you choose! Thanks.
Sean
