Been there done that. I've actually been on both sides of this issue. I rented a place to a couple of bikers in New Orleans when my college tenants took off for the summer, I had a similar experience in that they paid in full in advance for the four months they were renting, but left early and wanted money back. I showed them the portion of the lease that stated they were not entitled to a refund on unused days because the lease stipulated 30 days notice for early termination and even then there were penalties. This was not good enough for them and they threatened me with damage to the place and to my person. My response was twofold, don't be pricks now because you've been decent guys up to this point and the law's on my side. They chilled a little and I compromised....I asked them to paint the inside of the place and for that work I would refund their money. It was four small rooms and I supplied the paint. Took them a couple of hours and they got $200 back. We all left happy (and unhurt). Maybe there is some way you can find a compromise, even though it's hard when someone is being a dillweed.....
