Like Dean says I wouldn't ignore it. But I know someone who has ignored it (against my advice) for quite a few months now. Then again, yours or his may blow out this afternoon...
After it's off the rim, someone might be able to tell whether it's actually damage vs. manufacturing defect. You might just get some warranty coverage for it.
Buying one vs. a pair is based on how much tread is worn off.
