Best of Luck - a long battle looming.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 20 Dec 2004 03:43:57 In Reply to: credit card scam, TimBrown, Fri, 17 Dec 2004 08:10:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I received a call like that just over two years ago. The Crecit Card company called me at home (in Michigan) to verify a string of recemtly made charges in the Miami area. Over the telephone they said "Don't worry, we will take care of everything".
It took nearly a year for the situation to be completely resolved. In the mean time I had to pay the card company for the disputed purchases, prove I didn't make them (they developed amnesia that they talked to me In Michaigan at the same moment some of these charges were being made), and wait to get reimbursed by the card company. The retailer did have a signature for one of the purchases - a backwards scrawl that didn't resemble anything.
They immediately froze my old account and I had to wait a week for new cards, then they did two really stupid things. First, they automatically linked my old account to my new one, meaning any further fraudulent charges on the old account were immediately transfered to the new account! "Sh** for Brains" if I ever heard it. And second, they put an "audit watch" on my new account, meaning stores and other retail outlets had to call the 1-800 number on the back of the card and have all transactions verbally authorized by the card company before they would be accepted. Ever try to buy Christmas presents during Thanksgiving weekend with a credit card requiring all charges to be called in and verbally authorized? How about gas from one of the automated pumps?
In the end it all worked out. I got my money back, I dumped the old credit card company, and I now have two accounts with different card companies so I can't be held hostage by a single credit card company's policies in the future (one account almost never gets used-just enough to keep it open & active).
Best of luck. I hope all your holiday shopping is complete.
