I got my Master's from RPI but as part of the RSVP program. My youngest son graduated from RPI last Spring with a CS/Psych dual-major. I will e-mail you his address so you can talk directly to him. His girlfriend (currently at Harvard Med) also graduated last Spring from RPI. She may also be able to offer insight comparing RPI to other study intensive schools.
The town of Troy, NY is a lot like Flint, MI was when I graduated from GMI (now Kettering University) many years ago. The old joke was that if Detroit was the anus of the world, then Flint was 60 miles up it. I also know that the sophomore year of an engineering program is the toughest. Things get remarkably better during your Junior and Senior years. Don't get too discouraged. Rely on your friends and commiserate together with your mutual woes. Developing a new circle of friends at a new school may be tougher than you realize, but also maybe not.
Best of luck in your decision.
