Depending on your needs will determine what type of compressor to get.
My buddy has a very small 5 gal model that he uses to run a nail gun in his wood shop. I on the other hand fix and paint cars. My compressor has 35 gal tank.
You need to know what tools you are going to use. Then find out what PSI and Volume of air (SCFM)they need then decide what size would fit in your garage.
Air ratchets and impact need high PSI but not high volume.
Spray guns, grinders, DA's, need more volume and varying pressure.
Nail gun needs little voulme, but high PSI.
Every tool is different, it all depends on what you will do most of the time.
Keep in mind, the longer the air hose the more line pressure loss you will experience, something you should think about if you by a large tank and make it stationery in the garage. This is particularly important when you are spraying paint and need 35PSI at the gun.
Also if you are spraying paint a sparkless motor is a good idea, so that you don't ignite any fumes when it kicks on.
Hope this helps.
Jim
