With older turntable/changers, they had rotating wheels that hit various relays and switches to activate functions in sequence. While the prudent person would probably have a pro shop look at it, I would take a look.
Lift the unit off the base, flip it over(watch for plate/table falling off) and see what's up underneath. The wheels that I referred to typically were fastened to the shaft with a set screw. See if a set screw is loose and try rotating the wheel to the proper position to get the mechanism in synch.
If it's all electronic and controlled by a circuit board, I'd bail to the pros.
