I had a radar detector for about a week until I passed 3 speed traps and it never so much as blinked. It went back to the store. I think it was an Escort. I'll be getting a V1 as soon as I get the chance to read up about them.
Its not really a distraction. My first car ('90 MB 420SEL) had one and yeah it used to give some false beeps but it did force me to slow down more than I do in my 9000. Thats why I'll definitely be getting one...but I've lived without one for almost 3 years now.
But no, I honestly don't think its such a bad thing. Its definitely more of a set-it-and-forget-it than a CD player or radio.
