I just looked at a 20's era bungalow in Seattle - in the Greenwood area - 3 bedorom, 1.5 bath, VERY small lot on a BUSY street....$749,000!!! In 1980 this same house would have been $75,000 or less!
I've lived here my entire life, and, probably like many original-Seattleites, wish Microsoft (and the other companies that sprang up around here because of them) would go elsewhere. Sorry, but life used to be nice around here - rush-hour was an actual hour, heading into downtown Seattle in the morning, and away from at night. Now you can almost count on sitting in traffic any time of day going any direction. Traffic in the entire Seattle-metro (Tacoma all the way north past Everett) area is horrendous - can often take 1 to 1.5 hours to travel 12 miles (the distance on 520 from Redmond to Seattle)...In comparison, I spent quite a bit of time in Los Angeles last year, and would trade the traffic there for here anytime!
The Eastside cities (Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland) were nice suburbs - expensive, but still reasonable - quiet and laid back. It used to take me 2 or 3 minutes to travel from my mom's house in Redmond on Lake Sammamish to the freeway. There are times now when it has taken me 20 minutes or more.
People that have flocked here from California, etc. have influenced the way people drive: we used to be the nicest drivers in the country - would allow someone to merge, someone to cross the street when they are actually in a crosswalk and halfway across the street, etc. Not any more. Everybody here now drives like they hate everyone - they tail you even if you are already driving 20 mph over the limit; I had someone just this morning about 2 inches off my bumper honking, flashing lights, flipping me off, etc. even though it was a 25mph residential street WITH kids on bikes, etc. all around (Spring Break right now). UNBELIEVEABLE!
Don't get me wrong - I still wouldn't move anywhere else - it is a great region, but we have nowhere near the quality of life that we used to have...
