Used car deaelers, CarMax included, pay wholesale values for cars. IMO KBB.com trade in value for most cars is very fair. I would argue that cars with big incentives when new are probably only worth KBB.com trade in value at FAIR condition even if the car is good or excellent. If they give you good or excellent, so much the better. KBB.com trade in values are WAY LESS than actual Kelley Blue Book wholesale values.
If it's a late model car, try the dealer who sells 'em new, they have a better market and *might* pay more. Almost any used car dealer will give you a wholesale bid on a desireable piece of potential merchandise, including CarMax.
Used car managers and buyers are remarkably immune to wheelin' and dealin', but they do respect the effort. You can always "go for the bump".
