Depends on the model. My surfmobile is a 2000 9-5 Aero SportWagon and the key works the alarm so I just leave the "banana" in the car. I believe this is true of all 9-5's, but if you have the newer one piece key you'll have to order a key shaft without the remote part. I'll have to double check the alarm part, I know it locks all the doors, but I'm not 100% positive it sets the alarm.
A 9-3SS' will only set the alarm with the remote, so you have to use the remote to lock things with the passenger door open, leave the remote in the console, and use the emergency key in the fob to open the driver's door lock when you get back thereby setting off the alarm, so you better be able to find the remote in the car.
My NG900 I think works the same way as the 9-3SS.
