i agree that cleans were the best excercise i did for training. i rowed competitively for 4 years and this excercise i always dreaded because it kicked my a$$. after finished with rowing, i continued the workout because it kept me in great shape. i ended up feeling a snap in my back on my 3rd set of 5 and that was it. 2 years in and out of chiropractors, accupuncture, motrin, naproxen, etc. finally got to the point i could not walk due to sciatic pain in my right leg. i ended up with surgery (about 2 years ago) and now am doing well. i will not do cleans again, ever. too bad too. but it's just not worth it. only thing i can think of as to why it happened to me then was a lack of on the water practice for rowing. in the boat you are constantly using stabilizing muscles in the back to keep the spine in alignment. going a couple years without allowed these to slack off and i moved wrong.
also, there are different theories on the weight belt. the belt essentially allows you to lift more weight than your entire body can handle. also, it trains your body to rely on the belt in times of stress. therefore in an activity without the belt, you risk potential injury. me, i prefer only to lift what i can safely do with my entire body. but that's just me (and i was wrong once before...)
